Bird Song - Abalone & Ceramic Violin
Full Size Violin Size, 2 feet long
This original Peter Hazel violin is truly one-of-a-kind, specially created for the Reno Philharmonic. It reflects light beautifully which allows the colors to appear different from every angle. The colors are vibrant and expertly arranged. The face and sides of the piece are covered in polished abalone shells personally collected by Peter from the California coast, cut and shaped to fit perfectly. If you look closely, there is a playful hummingbird in flight hiding behind the strings. The back is composed of handmade ceramic fish scale mosaic tiles. This combination of natural, found materials and handmade glazed ceramic really makes this violin unique and rare.
For years, Peter has been making unique functional art from abalone which is where the material choice and mastery of the material originated. Peter's largest personal influence is the artist and architect, Antoni Gaudi which is evident in the color, material choices and architectural feel of the piece. Primarily, Peter specializes in utilitarian public art works which are intended to be enjoyed by the community. It is very seldom that he creates private, gallery pieces, like this violin. This year the only private works he has created are for charity which makes this violin all the more special.
Donated to the Reno Philharmonic
